facebook's cartoon profile picture

"Change your facebook profile picture to a cartoon from your childhood and invite your friends to do the same. Until monday (Dec.6) there should be no human faces on facebook, but an invasion of memories. This is for violence against children. pls. support tnx!!‌"

that was the message i received from my cousin last wednesday when i opened up my facebook account. i just ignored it like other spam messages that she is sending me thinking that its just one of her 'walang-magawa-sa-facebook' moment. but thru the day, i notice that most of my friends on facebook are really changing their profile pics to a cartoon character, even my office mates keep on bugging me on what emo cartoon character will i be changing it to since my identifier in the office is the emo guy hence i just look like an emo due to my emo hairstyle (does it sounds like im somewhat defensive?!?!!).

so since it was for a good cause, a supposedly campaign for violence against children, i gave in to the frenzy and reminisce what cartoons am i watching when i was a kid. zenki was the anime character i choose since other cartoon characters that i can think of is already someone's profile pic. this made me really think of my childhood days where i just watch those afternoon cartoons on tv after school. my office mates also had fun naming those cartoons from the 90's and 80's. it really brings back old memories :)

at the end of the day, around 80% of my facebook friends had changed their profile pic to a cartoon character. this latest facebook's meme-for-a-cause has really caught the attention of all facebook users. i wonder who started it and if its really for the violence against children campaign.

the answers were provided by facebook itself, hehe.. a friend of mine posted a video, eto ang dahiLan kng bakit nag paLit tayo ng primary picture which shows a boy in a cartoon character form being comically beaten by his dad, as what the audience's laughter in the background suggests. at the end of this video, he gets thrown down the stairs but then changed into a human boy lying down lifeless, with "the real children don't bounce back" tagline written. its a really sad video and this made me proud of being part of this change profile pic campaign.

but, another friend of mine posted a news from gma7, Facebook cartoon profile pics: A hijacked meme. it reports that this is just a hoax and there's no event or anything related to "violence against children" within this week until monday and that its still unknown who and how this all started. now i don't know what really the deal is.

whether its just for fun or not, whether you did change it for supporting the said cause or not, it all boils down on how you sees it. as for me, its still basically your own facebook account so you can do whatever you want with it :D
